Do You Have Mold in Your Basement?

Do You Have Have Mold in Your Basement?

The basement is often the last refuge for items long forgotten. Mold thrives in these dank spaces and can wreak havoc on your health if you're not careful. Mold can release toxins and cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to certain types. It's important to know the type of mold in your basement because mold can be dangerous for your health.

The most common types of mold in basements are penicillium and aspergillus. Penicillium is described as "perfect" for causing allergic reactions, not due to its toxicity but because an allergen may come from its spores. In contrast, aspergillus, also known as allergenic mold, is described as being "perfect" to cause respiratory problems because it can give off a type of mycotoxin called aflatoxin.

Other common types of mold are fungi, which are almost invisible to the naked eye. They're often described as dark green mold or "black streaks." These types of mold grow on damp, dark, and warm surfaces.

Black mold loves the dark and damp, making a basement the perfect environment to grow. While black mold is not harmful to you in small amounts, if it gets out of control, you will find yourself having some issues with your health.

Symptoms of Mold Exposure

  • Nausea, dizziness, and headache
  • Eye irritation
  • Allergies and rashes
  • Coughing, shortness of breath, or fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irritation to the skin
  • Burning or itchy throat or sinuses

What Causes Mold in the Basement?

Even though mold is considered indoor air, basement moisture problems can be just as aggravating. Moisture levels in basements are usually high due to the presence of water in the soil beneath your home. This excess moisture can lead to mold and mildew. Generally, mold growth is often the result of a combination of the right conditions and moisture levels.

Growth in the basement can occur if a leak or water intrusion into the building maintains humidity at an acceptable level for growth. The basement must have a proper ventilation system to keep the humidity below 60 percent. Have the basement dehumidifier inspected and make sure that it's properly operating. Ensure that water damage repair is done regularly in your basement to prevent unwanted mold.

Both indoor and outdoor sources can cause unwanted mold in a basement. You should ensure that your air filtering system is working properly and that the dehumidifier you have is running. If you notice any changes in the level of moisture in your house, it's important to call for help from a professional.
